BIO
Born on 10 March 1958 in Warsaw; daughter of the electrical engineer and scientist at the Międzylesie Institute of Electrical Engineering Jan Nasiłowski and the zootechnician Maria Krystyna, née Skierkowska. She attended the Adam Mickiewicz Grammar School No. IV in Warsaw. She was the champion of the 1977 Olympiad in Polish Literature and Language. That year she completed her advanced secondary education and started a degree in Polish philology at the University of Warsaw (UW). She studied philosophy in parallel, likewise at UW. In 1976, she received second prize in the For Another Voice (O inny głos) competition as part of the first edition of the Warsaw Literary Confrontations (Warszawskie Konfrontacje Literackie) festival for her cycle of poems Ofelie (Ophelias). She made her debut in 1977 with the poems Królowa Ofelia (Queen Ophelia) and Ofelia jest małą dziewczynką (Ophelia is a little girl), which were published in the periodical "Nowy Wyraz" (no. 3). She made her debut as a literary critic in 1978 with reviews published in the weekly "Literatura" and the monthly "Poezja". She continued to publish poems, articles and reviews in the same periodicals in subsequent years. During her studies she received the Wacław Borowy Prize and the Primus Inter Pares award, both in recognition of her academic achievements. She graduated from UW with a master's degree in 1982 and subsequently worked as a journalist with the weekly "Radar", where she also used the by-line Andrzej Nierozważny on her notes and articles. Between 1983 and 1987, she was a doctoral student at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN) in Warsaw. In the 1980s she collaborated with several periodicals, including "Twórczość” (from 1982), "Więź" (intermittently from 1982), "Odra" (intermittently from 1983), and "Res Publica" (intermittently from 1988 and with its successor "Res Publica Nowa" from 1992). She also contributed to periodicals that were not subject to state censorship: "Wola" (here she published polemics under the name Andrzej Wiślany), "Kultura Niezależna", "Almanach Humanistyczny" and the independent news agency Niezależna Agencja Informacyjna. Between 1985 and 1989, she was a member of the Board of the Criticism Section of the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Society. She was appointed to the Department of Contemporary Literature (later known as the Department of Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literature) at IBL PAN, working as an assistant. In 1988, she defended her doctoral thesis, Poezja opisowa Stanisława Trembeckiego (Stanisław Trembecki's descriptive poetry), which was supervised by Prof. Ryszard Przybylski. She was subsequently appointed lecturer. In subsequent years her research primarily focused on the history of twentieth-century Polish literature and on new directions in literary studies, including postmodernism and feminist criticism. She joined the Polish Writers' Association (SPP) in 1989, also serving on its Qualifications' Commission. In 1990/91 she resumed her studies in philosophy, this time at Collège Internationale de Philosophie in Paris thanks to a one-year French government grant. In 1990, she joined the editorial board of the journal "Teksty Drugie" [Second Texts], which is published by IBL. She was later appointed deputy editor of the bimonthly. Alongside her work as a literary critic, she remained active as a writer. Excerpts of her prose pieces, essays, articles and reviews appeared in publications including "Ansichten – Jahrbuch des Deutschen Polen-Instituts" (Darmstadt, 1989-99), "Teksty Drugie" (from 1990), "Tygodnik Powszechny" (intermittently from 1992), "Nowe Książki" (from 1996), "Kwartalnik Artystyczny" (from 1997), "Pogranicza" (1996, 2003 and 2008) and "Fraza" (intermittently from 1999). She made numerous appearances on Polish Radio and Polish Television as a literary critic. In 2000, she joined the Polish PEN Club and was involved in the work of the international Writers in Prison Committee. She was awarded a habilitation degree in 2001 from IBL for her collection of essays Persona liryczna (Lyrical Persona) and was subsequently appointed senior lecturer. In 2007, she was appointed director of the Creative Writing Course at IBL. That year she also took up a position as professor at the Bolesław Prus University of Humanities in Warsaw, working there until 2010. She was made state-appointed professor in 2010. In 2011, she joined the Center for Research on Contemporary Polish and became a member of the Literature and Gender Research Team (which in 2016 became the Women's Archive), both at IBL. She co-edited Encyklopedia Gender (Warsaw: 2014), for which she also co-authored entries. Between 2012 and 2016, she was secretary of the Board of the Polish PEN Club. In 2017, she was appointed chair of the Polish Writers' Association (SPP). She received the Silver Media for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis in 2016. In 1979, she married the literary history and later politician Michał Boni. They divorced in 1985. They have a daughter from the marriage, Dorota (b. 1983). In 1995, she married the architect Mikołaj Rek, with whom she has had two daughters: Dominika (b. 1995) and Joanna (b. 1998). She lives in Warsaw.
