He started a degree in theoretical physics the same year at the Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) in Torun, but abandoned the programme soon afterwards. From 1975, he studied Polish philology at the Higher School of Education (WSP) in Bydgoszcz. He was chair of the Student Academic Circle of Polish Philologists in 1978/79 at WSP in Bydgoszcz. In 1978, he was awarded the Wacław Borowy Prize of the Secretary of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). He defended his master's thesis in 1979 and was appointed assistant at the Department of Polish Philology at WSP in Bydgoszcz shortly afterwards. In 1981, he published the report Działalność koła naukowego polonistów w WSP w Bydgoszczy (Activities of the academic circle of Polish philologists at WSP in Bydgoszcz) in the WSP journal "Zeszyty Naukowe WSP w Bydgoszczy”. The same year he also published Wykaz prac magisterskich wykonanych w latach 1977-1979 w Zakładzie Filologii Polskiej WSP w Bydgoszczy (Overview of master's theses submitted between 1977 and 1979 at the Department of Polish Philology at WSP in Bygodszcz) in "Studia Filologiczne" (vol. 11 "Filologia Polska"). He made his debut as a literary historian the following year with the article W przedpokoju literatury nowej. He submitted his doctoral thesis, Polska powieść tendencyjna 1949-1955.
