Born on 24 May 1957 in Pleśna, near Tarnów; daughter of Franciszek and Salomea, née Gąciarz. She completed her secondary education at the Stanisław Anioł Grammar School No. IV in Tarnów in 1978. She studied Polish philology at the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow from 1977 until 1979 and then at the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) from 1979 until 1984. She made her debut as a poet in 1981 with a series of poems in "Arachne" (no. 2), the magazine of Polish philology students at KUL. She made her debut as a literary scholar in 1986 with an article about Arnold Słucki titled Biografia anioła (Biography of an Angel) published in the periodical "Więź" (nos 11/12). She was a doctoral researcher at KUL from 1987 to 1995, when she was a awarded a PhD for her thesis Czas siły zupełnej – o kategorii wysiłku w poezji C.K. Norwida (The Time of Absolute Force: On the category of effort in the poetry of C.K. Norwid). She was supervised by Prof. Marian Maciejewski. Her research focuses on Polish Romantic literature (especially the work of Adam Mickiewicz and Cyprian Norwid), nineteenth- and twentieth-century poetry, literary axiology and aesthetics (especially that of Roman Ingarden), literary theory, and the intersections of literature, philosophy and theology. In 1995, she was appointed to the Main Committee of the Polish Olympiad of Language and Literature, serving as its scientific secretary until 2002 before joining the Praesidium of the Main Committee in 2004. In the late 1990s, she joined the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Society. Between 1999 and 2021, she worked at the Institute of Literary Studies (from 2005 the Institute of Polish Philology, IFP) at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University (UKSW). In the early days of Polish philology at UKSW, she was involved in setting up the programme before serving as director of the IFP between 2016 and 2019. She also worked at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN) from 1999, collaborating with the Department of Late-Nineteenth Century Literature before joining the Department of Twentieth-Century Literature (which in 2012 became the Department of Contemporary Literature and Social Communication). In 2003, she was awarded a habilitation degree from KUL for her study Przemiany form i postaw elegijnych w liryce polskiej XIX wieku (Transformations of elegiac forms and foundations in nineteenth-century Polish lyric poetry). In 2005, she founded the publication series Problemy Romantyzmu (Problems in Romanticism) at UKSW, serving as chair of its Editorial Committee. The series was transferred to IBL PAN in 2022 under the new title stare/nowe problemy romantyzmu (old/new problems in Romanticism). Between 2004 and 2017, she organized a series of academic conferences accompanying the publication series, Colloquia romantyczne (Colloquia in Romanticism). She was awarded the UKSW Rector's Prize in 2005 in recognition of her academic achievements. In 2006, she established "Colloquia Litteraria", the biannual of the UKSW Institute of Polish Philology, serving as its editor-in-chief until 2020. In 2007, the was appointed to the Chair of Romanticism Studies at UKSW, turning it into the Chair of Romanticism Studies and C.K. Norwid Studies, while also incorporating the Centre for Literary Axiology and Aesthetics as part of the Chair. She was head of both the Chair and Centre until 2021. She joined the Polish Society for Aesthetics (Polskie Towarzystwo Estetyczne) in 2009. In 2011, she was made full professor in the humanities. In 2012, she established the publication series Zeszyty Zakładu Aksjologii i Estetyki Literackiej (Notebooks of the Centre for Literary Axiology and Aesthetics), serving as its editor-in-chief. In 2002, the series was transferred to IBL PAN under the new title Zeszyty Estetycznoliterackie (Literary Aesthetics Notebooks). From 2014, she was also an editor of the publication series Biblioteka Poezji Polskiej (Library of Polish Poetry), which appears with the Volumen Publishing House. In 2021, she took up a position as professor at the Research Group for European Literatures at IBL PAN. In 2022, she joined the editorial board of the journal "Ethos". She received the Silver Cross of Merit in 2004 and the Gold Cross of Merit in 2016. She lives in Warsaw. In 1980, she married the literary studies scholar Tomasz Chachulski. They have four children: Mateusz, Jakub, Agata and Marta.
