[This biography was written without the author responding to the questionnaire]. Born Stróżyk in 1964 in Poznan. She attended the Commission of National Education Grammar School No. IV in Poznan, where she completed her advanced secondary education in 1982. She studied Polish philology at the Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) in Poznan from 1983, graduating with a master's degree in 1988. In 1988/89, she worked as a Polish language teacher at Primary School No. 85 in Poznan. She started a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology at UAM in 1989, while in 1991 she was appointed research assistant at the Institute of Polish Philology (IFP) at UAM. She made her debut as a researcher with the article O sposobach i funkcjach mityzacji (Nowak – Myśliwski – Redliński) (On the modes and functions of mythicization: Nowak, Myśliwski, Redliński), which appeared in "Pamiętnik Literacki" (no. 3). In 1994, she was awarded a grant from the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) as part of the START programme for early career researchers. The same year, she made her debut as a translator with Polish versions of Barbara Cartland's novel A Ghost in Monte Carlo (Polish: Duch w Monte Carlo) and Tad Williams' Tailchaser's Song (Polish: Pieśń Łowcy). In subsequent years, she produced further translations of English-language prose, with a particular focus on children's literature. In 1994, she also joined the Poznan Society of Friends of Learning (PTPN). She was awarded a doctoral degree in 1995 for her dissertation Narracja pierwszoosobowa w polskiej prozie współczesnej (First-person narratives in contemporary Polish prose). She was supervised by Dr S. Wysłouch. She remained at IFP at UAM as a lecturer. Her research focused primarily on twentieth-century literature, including studies on the Holocaust and rural literature, literary theory (the issue of narrative forms), translation translation, and children's literature. Her articles and reviews appeared in periodicals including "Czas Kultury" (1991 and 1993-96), "Polonistyka" (intermittently 1992-2007), "Teksty Drugie" (1992, 1996, 1998, 2002, and 2004), "Arkusz" (intermittently 1993-2003), and "Kresy (1994 and 1998-99). She was awarded a habilitation degree in 2001 for her study Śladami Tristrama Shandy (Following in the footsteps of Tristram Shandy). She was subsequently appointed professor at UAM. She received the UAM Rector's scientific prize in 2002. She served in several functions at the university, namely as deputy research director of the IFP (2005-12) and then as dean of the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology (2012-16). She was lead or principal investigator on numerous research projects conducted between 1998 and 2014, including investigations funded by the State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN), the National Science Centre (NCN), the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the European Commission. In 2007, she joined the Polish Academy of Sciences' Committee on Literary Studies (KNoL PAN), chairing its Education Commission between 2008 and 2012. She was head of KNoL PAN from 2012 to 2014. She served as an expert reviewer, including evaluations of academic journals and assessments of degree programmes. Between 2009 and 2012, she was involved in the Human Resources Operational Programme (POKL) project and its sub-measure "Adapting the model of educating students of Polish philology to the demands of the contemporary labour market", which was responsible for modernizing study programmes. She co-authored academic textbooks. Her reviews and articles appeared in periodicals including "Nowe Książki" (2009-20) while she also collaborated with the editorial boards of "Zagadnienia Rodzajów Literackich" (serving on its Editorial Council) and "Czy/tam/czy/tu. Literatura dziecięca i jej konteksty" (as deputy editor). Between 2011 and 2020, she was head of the Department of Literary Semiotics at IFP at UAM, where she subsequently remained a member. She was appointed full professor in the humanities in 2015. She joined the jury of the Poznan Literary Prize in 2015 and of the Black Hat (Czarny Kapelusz) competition, which was organized as part of the Granda Poznan Crime Literature Festival, in 2019. In 2015/16, she took a postgraduate degree at UAM in higher education management and was awarded a Master of Business Administration (MBA). She was a visiting researcher at international universities, including Lund in Sweden (2010), Bologna, Italy (2011), the Polish Social and Cultural Association in London 2013/14, Zhaoqing University, China (2014), and Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines (2016). She also participated in international research conferences and also in events focused on management in cities including Belgrade, Brno and Sarajevo. Between 2016 and 2020, she was prorector for student affairs at UAM. During this period, she introduced mental health support for UAM students, the Gdy Nauka Jest Kobietą (When Science is a Woman) programme together with Prof. Beata Mikołajczyk, and created a network of coordinators for people with disabilities. She coordinated the application and then realization of a European Commission pilot project as part of the European Partnership for an Innovative Campus Unifying Regions (EPICUR), which led to UAM being awarded the status of European University in 2019. Together with her team, she was awarded a PO WER grant by the Centre for Developing Education, co-financed by the European Union as part of the European Social Fund within the PO WER framework. The funding was used in 2019/20 for the project Wielkopolska Szkoła Ćwiczeń w Cogito (The Greater Poland School of Cogito Exercises) whose aim was to train experts in Polish studies. She was academic mentor to the Na Wysokiej Górze (On the High Hill) Children's Art Group. In 2020, she was elected rector of UAM. She initiated the support programmes Widzialna Ręka UAM (The Visible Hand of UAM) and Obiady dla Seniora (Seniors' Dinners). She was a member of the project Team for Inicjatywa Doskonałości – Uczelnia Badawcza (Excellence Initiative: Research University). She was also appointed to the Honours' Convent (as chair), the Council for Distance Learning, the Programme Council of the Inter-area Individual Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences (MISH; as chair). She was elected chair of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities (KRUP) for the 2020-2024 term. In 2022, she was awarded the honorary Combatant Cross of Memory medal and won the Media Friendly Prize (Mediom Przyjazny) prize for 2022. The Chapter of Honorary Hipolits of the Hipolit Cegielski Society selected her for the Organic Labour Leader prize 2022 and awarded her the Honorary Hipolit Statue. In 2024, she was re-elected rector of UAM. She lives in Poznan. She is married to the Polish philologist and UAM scholar Jerzy Kaniewski. They have two children.
