BIO
Born on 15 December 1935 in Lodz into a middle-class Jewish family; daughter of the model maker Kuba Jabłoński, who was a member of the Poznan cavalry regiment between 1918 and 1920, and the housewife Maria Klepkarczyk, who became a bookkeeper after World War II. In 1939, she and her parents went into hiding in Łuck (now Lutsk, Ukraine). Around 1941, they were deported by Soviet forces to Siberia. They were put in barracks in Bergayev, Novosibirsk oblast, before being moved to the collective farm in the Stavropol Krai in the Northern Caucasus in 1944. She attended school there and was taught Russian, while her mother gave her Polish lessons. In March 1946, she and her parents returned to Lodz, where she attended the Society of Friends of Children (TPD) Primary School before joining the girls' Grammar School on the same site. She completed her advanced secondary education in 1954. She intended to study journalism in Warsaw. Despite passing her entry exams, she was taken off the list of students, with her place most probably being given to a student favoured by the authorities. For a time, she attended the classes as an extramural student before joining the Polish philology programme at the University of Lodz (UŁ). She planned to write a master's thesis titled Tuwim jako tłumacz liryki Puszkina (Tuwim as a translator of Pushkin's lyric poetry) but after passing her third-year exams, she abandoned her degree and in the second half of 1957 moved together with her parents to Israel. She settled there permanently. Since she did not know Hebrew, she worked as a physical labourer. During this period, she learned Hebrew in courses known as Ulpan before taking a year-long course in Be'er Sheva. In 1960, she became a teacher in a primary school before teaching in secondary schools for children with learning difficulties. In 1960/61, she studied general history and the history of the Jewish nation at Tel Aviv University. She travelled around Europe in 1968. Between 1980 and 1984, she worked in the Tel Aviv-based Polish-language daily "Nowiny-Kurier", where she published several dozen column pieces as well as the regular local column Bieg z przeszkodami (Steeplechase). She made her debut as a prose writer with the short story Ogrody (Gardens), which appeared in the Hollywood-based Polish-language literary periodical "Literatura" (summer 1980). Between 1984 and 1986, she worked as a Polish language tutor at Tel Aviv University. During this period, she took up translation into both Polish and Hebrew, focussing initially on wartime memoirs before also moving into literary works. She published her own works as well as translations in Polish-language periodicals based abroad, including "Language Bridges" (Richardson, TX; 1989), the "Przegląd Polski" supplement of the daily "Nowy Dziennik" (1990), "B1" (Dortmund; 1996), and "Reunion” (USA, 2000), as well as in the Hebrew periodicals "Ahshav" (1984, 1987, and 1995), "Raw-Kol" (1989), "Mozanim" (1989 and 1999), "Nekudataim" (2002), "Szwo" (2017), "Ariel" (1993; including the short story "Spotkanie" [Encounter], which was translated into four languages) and the literary supplements of "Ma’ariw" (1983–84), "Davar" (1993), and "Haaretz" (2000). In 1986, she co-founded the Polish Section at the Federation of Writers' Unions in Israel, which later became the Association of Authors Writing in Polish in Israel. She served as its chair between 1990 and 1992. She edited the yearbook "Kontury" in 1988/89 (nos 1-2). After leaving the Association alongside her fellow writers Eli Barbur, Aniela Jasińska↑ and others, she founded the Akcenty Literary Group, which she also chaired. In 1988, she served as Andrzej Wajda's translator when he was working on the play Dybuk at the Habima Theatre, Israel's National Theatre. His piece opened the Israel Festival in Jerusalem. In the late 1980s, she started to publish poems (including pieces for children) in both Polish and Hebrew. Her debut book was a collection of short stories in Hebrew translation that had previously published in periodicals. It appeared in 1993 under the title Kikar ha’melech Albert (King Albert's Square). Following the publication of three "Akcenty" yearbooks between 1990 and 1993, she gave up her position as head of the periodical since she could again publish in Poland. During this time, the Akcenty Group ceased its activities, although she continued to head the Akcenty publishing house until 2016. In 1994, she wrote the lyrics for the song Śpij maleńki (Sleep, little one) for the film Nowy kraj (New Country). The same year, she travelled to Poland for the first time since her departure for Israel. She visited Warsaw and her native Lodz. She travelled to Poland annually between 1994 and 2016 to promote her books. She also visited France, Italy, Serbia and the Netherlands. In 1995, she joined the AKUM creative association in Israel. From 1999, she published only in Polish. Her prose works, poems, translations and essays have appeared in the periodicals "Czas Kultury" (1990–91, 1993, 1995, and 1997–98), "Literatura na Świecie" (1992, 2004, and 2008), "Tygiel Kultury" (1996–98, 2000–05, 2007, and 2011: including in nos 7/9 previously unpublished poems for children), "Dziś" (2004), "Teka" (2005/2006), "Fraza" (2008, 2010, 2018, and 2021), and "Bliza" (2021). She lives in Tel Aviv.
