Born on 6 August 1967 in Koper, Slovenia; son of the oil engineer, lecturer and traveller Wojciech Biedrzycki, and the literary studies scholar and translator Katarina Šalamun-Biedrzycka who in the 1960s was a tutor in Slovenian at the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow; brother of the biologist, journalist and translator Mariusz Biedrzycki. He spent in childhood in Ljubljana, where his father was employed at the Institute of Geology. He and his family moved to Krakow in 1974. Between 1981 and 1985, he attended the A. Witkowski Grammar School No. V in Krakow. From 1985 to 1988, he studied physics at UJ before beginning a degree in experimental geophysics at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow in 1989. After graduating in 1993, he worked as a geophysical engineer specializing in searching oil and natural gas reserves. He made his debut in 1987 with the poem Widziałem Ginsberga, młodzi [I saw Ginsberg, young folks] that appeared in the underground artzine "Paranoya" (using the pen name: Koza Fay). He was associated with the "brulion" group. His poems appeared in periodicals including "Kafar" (1988), "Elita" (1991), "brulion" (1991, 1992, and 1995), "FA-art" (1993, 1997, 2002, and 2012), "Czas Kultury" (1994 and 1996), "Nowy Nurt" (1994 and 1995), "Tygodnik Powszechny" (1994), "Studium" (1997 and 2002; as MLB), "Arkadia" (1998, 1999, and 2002; also using the cryptonym: MLB), and "Rita Baum" (2003 and 2005; as: MLB). In 2004, he took up translation, producing Polish versions of poems in Slovenian (sometimes in collaboration with his mother), including works by his uncle the poet Tomaž Šalamun ("Literatura na Świecie" 2004, no. 5/6), as well as those by Meta Kušar, Uroš Zupan, Katja Gorečan, Aleš Šteger and Anja Zag Golob. He has also translated works of poetry from English, including pieces by Jorie Graham and Ruth Padel. At the same time, he published his own poetry and column pieces in periodicals including "Arte" (2005/06), "Lampa" (2006) and "Fraza" (2013). Between 2010 and 2015, he co-created the Krakow-based anthropological-cultural spoken-word periodical "Gadający Pies". In 2011, he joined the Polish Writers' Association (SPP) and then in 2016 the Polish PEN Club. Since 2012, he has taught on the postgraduate degree in Literary and Artistic Studies (Studium Literacko-Artystyczne) at the Faculty of Polish Studies at UJ. He was awarded the Krakow UNESCO City of Literature prize in 2021. He received the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis in 2022. He lives in Krakow. He is married Edyta, née Cyraniak; they have a daughter, the painter and book illustrator Ala Biedrzycka (b. 1993).
