BIO
Born on 3 February 1928[P] in Warsaw; son of the engineer, historian and journalist Adam Szczypiorski, and Jadwiga, née Epsztajn (in documents used after 1945 – Majewska). He attended the Private Mikołaj Rej Grammar School and Secondary School of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Warsaw. During the German occupation in World War II, he continued his education in secret lessons offered at the same school. At this time, he started writing literary pieces. In spring 1943, during a secret literary evening gathering, he gave a reading of his short stories. From autumn 1943 to spring 1944, he worked in a motorcycle workshop as an assistant metalworker. He was a member of the People's Guard of the Polish Socialist Party – Freedom, Equality, Independence (PPS-WRN; where he used the pseudonyms As and Asia). In June 1944, he completed the fourth grade of secondary school. He was involved in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, fighting in the Old Town with the 3rd battalion of the People's Army, which was subordinate to the Home Army's Północ (North) Group. In early September 1944, he left the city together with this parents and other civilians who were evacuated. Following a short stay in a transit camp in Pruszków, he and his father were deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. From February 1945, he was held in a sub-camp at the Heinkel aircraft factory, which was liberated in April 1945. He then spent a period as a war reporter for the Telegraphy Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS), embedded in the II Corps of the Red Army. He returned to Warsaw in spring 1945 and joined the Youth Organization of the Society of Workers' Universities (OM TUR) and the Polish Socialist Party (PPS). After a short time, he moved to Katowice where from February 1946 he was head of the press office of the Voivodeship Committee of OM TUR. He was also a pupil at the Private Grammar School for Adults. During this period, he made his debut as a journalist with a critical review of a production of Juliusz Słowacki's Lilla Weneda at Warsaw's Polski Theatre. The review, titled Co myślisz starcze o ludach zachodnich? (What do you, old man, make of the Western peoples?) appeared in "Kuźnica" (no. 5; under the byline: A. S-r.). He completed his advanced secondary education in 1946 and was subsequently appointed director of the press department of the Board of the (Silesian?) District of the Polish Western Union (Polski Związek Zachodni), which promoted the Polish cause in the western, and formerly-German, regions of the country, while also publishing in its bi-weekly "Polska Zachodnia". From June 1947, he was active as a journalist for the Katowice-based newspaper "Gazeta Robotnicza". That year, he also served on the editorial college of the OM TUR instructional monthly "Miesięcznik Instrukcyjny OM TUR Gromada", while likewise collaborating with the OM TUR periodical "Młodzi Idą" and the bi-weekly "Film", where he was a regular film reviewer (with some texts published under the pseudonym August Rewere) and also contributed notes in the column Przegląd teatralny (Theatre Review; as : (a), A.S., (s.), (S.)). In 1947, he joined the Trade Union of Journalists of the Republic of Poland (ZZD RP). In autumn 1947, he enrolled at the Diplomatic and Consular Factory of the Academy of Political Sciences in Warsaw but soon abandoned his degree as he was required to repeat a year. In 1948, he was appointed director of the Warsaw Programme Office of the Film Polski State Enterprise. That year, he made his debut as a prose writer with the short story Otwarta brama (Open gate), which appeared in the bi-weekly "Wolni Ludzie" (special issue, April). He worked as a journalist for the Warsaw daily "Życie Warszawy", while from April 1948 he was head of the editorial board of the newspaper "Życie Lubelskie". In December 1948, following the merger of the PPS and the Polish Workers' Party, he joined the ruling Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR). He was transferred to Radom in 1950, where he became editor-in-chief of "Życie Radomskie". He published articles and notes in the newspaper in the columns Między nami (Between us; as: ASIK, (ASIK)) and Naszym zdaniem (In our view; as: (sz), (sz.), (Sz.)). He also contributed theatre reviews (as: AS., as, AS). In 1949, he married Ewa Markowska (she died in 1994). In early 1951, he was removed from the editorial board of "Życie Radomskie". He then moved to Katowice, where he was appointed political editor at the Katowice Station of Polish Radio (PR), while in 1953 he was made director of the Political Section and in 1954-55 he served as director of the Literary Section. In 1951, he made his debut as an author of radio plays with the piece Anaconda. He published in "Życie Literackie" (1952-54) and "Przegląd Kulturalny" (1955-56). During this period, he developed as a prose writer, producing short stories and novels (including crime novels), while also writing reportage pieces and scripts. In 1955, in collaboration with the Security Service of the People's Republic of Poland (PRL), he was involved in efforts to encourage his parents to return to Poland (his father was an activist in the émigré PPS in London). As part of these activities, he travelled to Vienna in April 1955, officially as a member of the delegation of the Central Committee of the PZPR that was participating in the conference of the International Confederation of Former Prisoners of War, while in September that year he travelled to Paris, officially as an employee of the Ministry of International Trade. These efforts resulted in his parents returning to Poland in October that year. He spent several months in 1956 as literary director of the Stanisław Wyspiański Śląski Theatre in Katowice before undergoing intelligence training and later that year becoming attaché for press and cultural affairs at the consulate (later embassy) of the People's Republic of Poland in Copenhagen. In autumn 1957, he was removed from a list of candidates for membership of the Polish Writers' Union (ZLP). He was recalled from Copenhagen in May 1958 and settled in the village of Wiązowna, near Warsaw, and then in the capital's Radość district. That year, his contract with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was terminated and he was expelled from the PZPR. He was then employed by Polish Radio, initially at the Chief Editorial Office for Political and Informational Programming, then at the Editorial Office for Reporting at the Literary Section, followed by the Editorial Office for Special Programming, before returning to the Office for Political and Informational Programming (where he occasionally used the pseudonym Ewa Markowska). In 1963, he received a prize from the Polish Society of Authors and Composers ZAiKS, and from the Committee for Radio and Television. He joined the ZLP the same year. Between 1964 and 1967, he presented a Sunday political show on Polish Radio 1. In 1965, he moved permanently to Warsaw. He published literary pieces, column pieces and reports in periodicals including "Za wolność i lud" (1958-70), "Tygodnik Kulturalny" (1964-66 and 1973-74), "Współczesność" (1965-70) and "Ekran" (intermittently 1966-72). In 1967-68, he had a regular column in "Życie Warszawy", Mój poczciwy tydzień (My honest week). Between 1967 and 1974, he collaborated with the weekly magazine "Polityka" (including between 1972 and 1974, the regular television review column TV). In late 1968, he resigned from Polish Radio, with his contract subsequently terminated in March 1969. From 1969, he was under permanent surveillance by the Security Service. In 1971, he joined the Polish PEN Club, serving on its Main Board from 1972, while from 1976 he was a member its Praesidium and treasurer, a role he resumed in 1988. He rejoined the Board in 1991. He was involved in the Polish Society of Authors and Composers (ZAiKS), chairing the Board of the Literary Authors' Section from 1971 and serving on its Praesidium and acting as secretary of its Board from 1974, while in 1997 he joined its Association Council. He returned to Polish Radio in 1971 in a part-time role as a senior journalist with the Head Editorial Office for Journalism at the National Programming Department. Between 1973 and 1976, he served on the editorial board of the monthly "Odra", where he also published articles alongside literary and theatre reviews. In 1975, he was appointed chair of the Society for the Protection of Animals. In December 1975, he was a signatory to the Memorandum of 59, which protested proposed changes to the Constitution of the People's Republic of Poland. From 1976, he collaborated with the Workers' Defence Committee (KOR), where his father was among the co-founders. He was also active in a team that produced reports for the Polish League for Independence. In 1978, he was co-editor of a letter issued by the Board of the Polish PEN Club regarding censorship. He collaborated with the periodical "Krytyka" (in 1978 and 1980; using the pseudonym Bronisław Kotowicz), which was published outside the reach of state censorship. He travelled around the USA. He was involved in the activities of the Experience and Future Discussion Group (Konwersatorium Doświadczenie i Przyszłość). He was forbidden from travelling abroad, while the premiere of his play about Janusz Korczak, Strefa milczenia (Silent zone), was also banned by censors. He joined the editorial board of the quarterly "Zapis", which was published outside the reach of state censorship. Following the founding of the Independent Self-governing Trade Union Solidarity (NSZZ Solidarność) in August 1980, he joined the Commission for Censorship of the Negotiating Committee of Artistic and Scientific Communities and Associations, which he later chaired. He was also a member of the Verification Committee of the Main Board of the Polish Writers' Union (ZLP). In 1981, he co-edited a statement by the Polish PEN Club marking the 190th anniversary of the Third of May Constitution. He was a member of the organizing office of the Congress of Polish Culture, where he gave a speech on 12 December. Interned following the imposition of martial law on 13 December 1981, he was initially held in Białołęka prison, followed by the camp in Jaworze, where together with Władysław Bartoszewski, he organized what came to be known as the weekly PEN Club evenings. Szczypiorski also kept a diary there. He was informed that he was no longer interned in May 1982 while on so-called leave in Warsaw. He was ultimately dismissed from his role at Polish Radio and became involved in the underground literary world associated with the Independent Education Group (Zespół Oświaty Niezależnej) and the Committee for Independent Culture (Komitet Kultury Niezależnej). In the 1980s, he was involved in the activities of Pastoral Care for Artists (Duszpasterstwo Środowisk Twórczych). His literary articles, journalistic pieces, and prose excerpts appeared in periodicals published outside the reach of state censorship, including "Zapis" (1979-81 and 1985; including in 1980-81 the regular column Długopisem na marginesach [Markings in the margins]), "Puls" (1979, 1985, and 1987) and "Kultura Niezależna" (1986-87), as well as in the Catholic press, including "Tygodnik Powszechny" (1981-82, 1984, and 1988-89), "Przegląd Katolicki" (1984-85 and 1987) and in "Królowa Apostołów" (including in 1986-87 the column Alfabet kultury [Cultural alphabet]). In 1983, he gave a series of lectures in Switzerland. After returning to Poland, he was again barred from travelling abroad, with the ban lasting until 1985. Following the dissolution of the ZLP and the suspension of the Board of the Polish PEN Club in 1983, he joined efforts to ensure their revival. In 1986, he was among 77 artists and scholars who signed a petition calling for the democratization of civic life, while in 1987 he co-edited a statement by 64 writers supporting pluralism in politics and trade unions. In 1986, he was awarded the prize of the London-based publication "Wiadomości" for his novel Początek (published in English translation as: The Beautiful Mrs Seidenman). In 1987, he was appointed to the jury of the independent B. Sadowska Literary Prize. In 1988, he was awarded the Austrian state prize for European literature in recognition of his oeuvre, in particular his novel Początek (1988; The Beautiful Mrs Seidenman), as well as the Nelly Sachs literary prize of the city of Dortmund the following year. He was co-founder of the Polish Writers' Association (SPP), while he was also the first chair of the Board of the Polish-Israeli Friendship Society until 1996. Between 1989 and 1991, he was a senator on the list of the Citizens' Committee with Lech Wałęsa leader of the Independent Self-governing Trade Union Solidarity. He served on Commissions for Culture, Mass Media, Science and National Education, and Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the Citizens' Movement for Democratic Action (Rada Krajowa Ruchu Obywatelskiego – ROAD) and then the Democratic Union (UD). In 1990, he was awarded the Culture and Art Prize that was funded by the Central Committee of German Catholics and the German Bishops' Conference. From 1993, he collaborated with the weekly "Wprost". In 1994, he joined the programme council of the Polish Cultural Institute in Berlin. That year, he received the Austrian J.G. Herder Prize from the University of Vienna, while in 1995 he was presented with the A. Gryphius prize of the Artists' Guild in Esslingen, Germany. In 1998, he was elected chair of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers, which campaigns for artists' rights. That year, he received the Golden Pen prize from the German publishing house Bauer in recognition of his efforts to reconcile the Polish and German nations. Throughout the 1990s, he published regular columns in the weeklies "Wprost" (to 1998) and "Polityka" (1999-2000; including the series Irytacje [Irritations]). He was an honorary member of the Warsaw City Rotary Club, a member of the Board of the Stefan Batory Foundation, the programme council of the Semper Polonia Foundation, the Chapter of the A. Drawicz Prize, and of the Polish Foundation for Children and Youth. He was awarded the Knight's Cross (1964) and the Commander's Cross (1997) of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Medal of Merit for Tolerance in 1999, and the German honours Pour le Mérite and the Great Cross with Star (both in 1995). He was also posthumously awarded the Honorary Diploma of the Polish-German Prize of the governments of both countries in 2001. He died on 16 May 2000 in Warsaw, where he is buried at the Evangelical Reformed Cemetery. In the 2000, the Polish Foundation for Children and Youth awarded the inaugural Andrzej Szczypiorski prize, while in 2002 the weekly "Polityka" together with the Sens publishing house organized a national literary competition named after him.
