Born on 11 March 1938 in Jarosław in the Subcarpathian region; son of Mikołaj Iwosa [later: Ivossé] and Anna, née Babiak. He spent his childhood in Jarosław where he completed his education at the Technical School for Roadbuilding and Surveying in 1958. He moved to Wroclaw the same year, where he worked in casual jobs and was also a non-enrolled student on the journalism programme at the University of Wroclaw (UWr). He worked in the Subcarpathian region between 1964 and 1966, supervising the construction of roads and bridges in the District Authority for Local Roads (Powiatowy Zarząd Dróg Lokalnych) in Brzozów, while from 1967 to 1972 he was a senior economist at Agricultural Construction Transport and Equipment Company (Przedsiębiorstwo Sprzętowo-Transportowe Budownictwa Rolniczego) in Sieniawa near Jarosław. He started writing works of literature during this period. He made his debut in 1968 with the poem Otwieranie miasta (Opening Up the City), published in "Życie Przemyskie" (no. 34), while in 1969 his first prose pieces, Pory dnia (Times of Day), appeared in the same publication (no. 43). He worked as a senior economist at the Jarlan textile factory in Jarosław between 1972 and 1982. He was also director of Art-Club in Jarosław until 13 December 1981, when martial law was declared in Poland. Throughout this time he continued to write poetry and prose, publishing his works in periodicals including "Prometej" (from 1971), "Nowiny" (1975-81) and "Profile" (intermittently from 1978 to 1982). He received many awards and prizes in poetry and prose competitions, including the "Złota Lampka Górnicza” (The Golden Miner's Lamp; 1968 and 1970), "Bieszczadzki Laur" (1972), and the Award of Polish Radio's Krakow Station (Krakowska Rozgłośnia Polskiego Radia) in 1973. In 1980, he won the third prize at the Moscow Animated Film Festival for his script for Inspektor na tropie (Inspector on the Case). He was a member of the Independent Self-governing Trade Union Solidarity (NSZZ Solidarność) and edited "Do Rzeczy", the information bulletin of Solidarity' inter-factory workplace commission in Jarosław, which appeared between April and November 1981. Following the imposition of martial law, he continued his conspiratorial activities as part of the underground Solidarity trade union. From 1982, he also published his novels. He left for West Germany in spring 1988 for political reasons. He remained in a refugee camp in Oldenburg until autumn 1988 when he was granted asylum. He worked as a labourer, kitchen assistant and caretaker. He published poetry, articles and reviews in periodicals and journals that appeared in Poland and abroad, including "Słowo" (1990-91), "Dziennik Polski i Dziennik Żołnierza” (London, 1994-2005), "Teczka" (Paris), "Kurier" (Hamburg), "Samo Życie” (Ahlen) and "Nasze Słowo” (Würzburg). He was co-founder of the Club of Catholic Intelligentsia (Klub Inteligencji Katolickiej – KIK) in Lübeck (1994) and the Polonus Society for the Promotion of Polish Culture (Towarzystwo Krzewienia Kultury Polskiej Polonus) in Kiel (1995). He also took up easel painting, graphic art and drawing, putting his works on display in many group exhibitions throughout Germany, including shows in the cities of Oldenburg, Lübeck and Hamburg. Between 1995 and 1997, he ran an art gallery in Oldenburg. He was awarded the Honorary Prize of the City of Jarosław in 1995 and the Artex Publishing award in the USA in 1996. He joined the London-based Union of Polish Writers Abroad (Związek Pisarzy Polskich na Obczyźnie) in 1997, the Éditions Casimir Le Grand Association in Paris the same year, the Padre Pio Jarosław Charity Association (Jarosławskie Stowarzyszenie Charytatywne im. Ojca Pio) in 1999, Lübecker Autorenkreis und seine Freunde e.v. in 2000 (remaining a member until 2006), and the Paris-based Polish Association of Authors, Journalists and Translators in Europe (Association Polonaise des Auteurs, Journalistes et Traducteurs en Europe; APAJTE) in 2001. In 2004, he started collaborating with "Gazeta Kulturalna", based in Zelów, publishing poems and articles there. He also worked with the quarterlies "Łowiec Galicyjski" and "Porady na zdrowie". He married the Polish teacher Anna Nepelska in 1964. She died in 2006. He is father to the art historian and poet Iwona Ivosse-Pinno (b. 1965). He lives in Jarosław and in Wankendorf, Germany.
