BIO
Born on 22 August 1965 in Góra Śląska; son of the teachers Roman Pawelec and Genowefa, née Sowa. He joined the Powstańcy Śląscy [Silesian Insurgents] Grammar School in Rybnik in 1979, completing his advanced secondary education there in 1983. He then studied Polish philology at the University of Silesia (UŚ) in Katowice, graduating with a master's degree in 1988. He was then employed at the Department of Literary Theory at the Institute of Polish Philology (which in 1991 became the Institute of the Study of Polish Literature INoLP, and in 2005 was named after Ireneusz Opacki). His research focused on historical poetics, genre studies, literary communication and the art of interpretation, particularly in the context of Polish poetry of the second half of the twentieth century. He made his debut in 1987 with the article Pokolenie izolacji. Na marginesach młodej poezji (The Isolated Generation: At the margins of the young poetry scene), which explored the works of Mariusz Grygierczyk, Sławomir Matusz and Bogdan Prejs. The article appeared in the periodical "Student" (no. 16), where he continued to publish until 1989. He developed his output in the fields of literary criticism, with his articles, reviews and notes appearing in periodicals that were published outside the reach of state censorship: "Na Drodze" (1987-89; using the by-line: Da-Ro; he served on its editorial board in 1987/88), "Kontra" (1987-88; as: Da-Ro), in the quarterly "Gąbka" (1988-89; as: T.T., Tomasz Trzecieski; he served on the editorial board in 1988/89), and "bruLion" (1989-90). He also published in "Res Publica" (1988-90), "Życie Literackie" (1988-89), "Autograf" (1989-90), "Twórczość" (1989-91), "Kresy" (1990-91 and 1993; he served on the editorial board from 1991 to 1995), and "Nowe Książki", where he published numerous reviews between 1996 and 2000. In 1992, he was awarded a doctoral degree from UŚ for his dissertation Reguły organizacji wypowiedzi poetyckiej w wierszach Stanisława Barańczaka (The Rules of Organizing Poetic Expression the Poems of Stanisław Barańczak), which was supervised by Prof. Ireneusz Opacki. Pawelec was subsequently appointed lecturer at the Department for Literary Theory (which in 2003 became the Department for Historical Poetics and the Art of Interpretation). From 1993 to 1995 he was director of programming at the Katowice radio station TOP FM. He was awarded a scholarship by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) in 1994. In November 2000 he was appointed by the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship to the post of Chair of the Programme Council of Cultural Institution Ars Cameralis in Katowice. In January 2004 he was appointed director of the University of Silesia Library, while in 2012 he became director of the Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library (CINiBA), a joint project of the University of Silesia and the University of Economics in Katowice. He was awarded a habilitation degree from UŚ in 2004 for his study Świat jako Ty. Poezja polska wobec adresata w drugiej połowie XX wieku (The World as You: Polish poetry and its addressees in the second half of the twentieth century). Between 2004 and 2007, he was director of the Inter-Institutional Polish Studies Centre for Social Communication at UŚ. He was appointed professor at UŚ in 2006. That year he joined the Scientific Council of the Silesian Digital Library. In 2007, he was appointed head of the Department of Historical Poetics and the Art of Interpretation at INoLP at UŚ. In 2009, he joined the Scientific Council of the journal "Bibliotheca Nostra" and in 2011 became a member of the Programme Council of the Silesian Library in Katowice.
