BIO
Born on 16 February 1959 in Wroclaw; son of the workers Edmund and Łucja. He completed his advanced secondary education at the Bolesław Wrymouth Grammar School No. VIII in Wroclaw in 1978. He then studied Polish philology at the University of Wroclaw (UWr). He made his debut in 1981 with the poems Szymon (Simon), Mewy (Seagulls) and Tempus manet, aeternitas ugit that were published in "Refleks", the periodical of the Independent Students’ Association (NZS) of the Faculty of Philology at UWr (no. 3). He graduated from UWr in 1983 with a master's degree and then worked as a librarian. For a short time he was also a teacher of Polish language at the Stefania Sempołowska Grammar School No. X in Wroclaw. In 1984, he took up a post at the Library of the Institute of Polish Philology (IFP) at UWr while continuing to write poetry before later turning to prose. In 1984, he won the Stanisław Grochowiak National Poetry Competition. That year he started collaborating with the periodical "Odra" as a reviewer and critic. From 1986 to 1988 he also collaborated with the independent literary periodicals "Obecność" and "Kontur", where he published reviews (likewise using the pseudonym Stefan Dedalus). From the early 1990s he published numerous reviews and articles in periodicals including "Kresy" (1990–2008), "Warsztaty Polonistyczne" (1992–93 and 1995–96), "Tygodnik Powszechny" (1994–2007), "Teksty Drugie" (1995, 1997, 2004, 2005, and 2008), and "Nowe Książki" (from 1996). He also published online with the literary portal Biuro Literackie, including the essay cycle Niepogubione afekty (Affects not Lost). In 1990, he took up a post at the Department of the History of post-1918 Polish Literature at IFP at UWr (in 2005 it became the Centre for post-1989 Polish Literature). His research focused on twentieth and twenty-first century literature, including the works of Stanisław Barańczak, Miron Białoszewski, Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz and James Joyce. In 1998, he defended his doctoral thesis at UWr, Kultura i egzystencja w poezji Jarosława Marka Rymkiewicza (Culture and Existence in the Poetry of Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz), which was supervised by Prof. Jacek Łukaszewicz. He was subsequently appointed lecturer. From the late 1990s he also wrote music criticism. In 1999, he started writing the column CDn (tbCD) in "Odra", where he reviewed new albums. He also published texts on music in "Jazz Forum" and "Tygodnik Powszechny". His reviews and columns also appeared in "Twórczość" from 2005 and "Czas Kultury" from 2007. In 2008, he joined the jury of the Silesius Wrocław Poetry Prize, while also serving on the Chapter of the Wroclaw Music Prize. He was awarded a habilitation degree from UWr in 2014 having submitted a book and a collection of journal articles for assessment as a single publication titled Afirmatywne i krytyczne funkcje formy w polskiej literaturze nowoczesnej (Affirmative and Critical Functions of Form in Polish Modernist Literature). In 2015, he started collaborating with "Tygiel Kultury" as a columnist, while in 2016 he began writing for the online literary magazine biBLioteka (the essay cycle Niepogubione afekty [Affects not Lost] is available at: http://www.biuroliterackie.pl/biblioteka/cykle-nazwy/niepogubione-afekty/, accessed: 3 November 2020).
