Born on 3 February 1936 in Ościsłowo (Ciechanów district); daughter of the administrator Stefan Pyszniewski, and Filomena, née Smoleńska. She lived in Strzegowo (Mława district) from 1945, completing primary school and two classes of secondary school there. She moved to Ciechanów in 1950, completing her education at the Zygmunt Krasiński Grammar School in 1952. She started studying Polish philology at the University of Warsaw (UW) the same year. After graduating with a master's degree in 1956, she worked as an assistant and then senior assistant at the Chair of Literary Theory at UW to 1964. She made her debut in 1957 with the article Zagadnienia wersyfikacji w publikacjach ostatnich lat (Versification in recent publications) in "Polonistyka" (no. 2, under the name: T. Pyszniewska). In her research, she focused primarily on studying the literature and culture of the Polish Enlightenment and on questions related to literary theory. In 1960, she married Wojciech Kostkiewicz. From 1962 to 1973, she served on the Organizing Committee of the Literary Theory Conferences of Early Career Researchers in Polish Philology.
