Born on 17 September 1936 in Sosnowiec; daughter of the trader and veteran of the Silesian Uprisings Władysław Lubas, and Stanisława, née Nowicka. She spent the German occupation in Sosnowiec. After the war she attended the local Trade School, completing her advanced secondary education there in 1953. She graduated with a degree in Polish philology from the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow in 1957 before spending several years working at middle schools in Sosnowiec. She was awarded a doctoral degree in 1970 for her dissertation Józef Aleksander Gałuszka na tle poezji Krakowa lat międzywojennych (Józef Aleksander Gałuszka in the context of interwar-era Krakow poetry), which was supervised by Prof. Jan Nowakowski. She was subsequently appointed lecturer at the Higher School of Education (WSP) in Krakow (which in 1999 became the Pedagogical Academy before becoming the Pedagogical University of Krakow, named after the Commission of National Education, [UP] in 2008). Her research focused on subjects including twentieth-century Polish poetry and questions related to Polish and international (largely French) autobiography. She made her debut in 1969 with the article Józef Aleksander Gałuszka. W trzydziestolecie śmierci (Józef Aleksander Gałuszka: The thirtieth anniversary of his death), which was published in the quarterly "Profile" (nos 8/9). From 1970 she published articles and reviews in "Ruch Literacki". In 1975/76, she was a research fellow at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN). Between 1978 and 1981, she was a Polish language tutor at Université Clermont-Ferrand II in France. She was awarded a habilitation degree in 1984 for her book Style wypowiedzi pamiętnikarskiej (Styles of Autobiographical Expression) and was subsequently appointed senior lecturer at Krakow WSP. That year she took up a post at the Institute of Neophilology at WSP. Between 1985 and 1991, she was deputy director of the Department of Literature at the Institute of Polish Philology at WSP. She was a fellow at Université Libre de Bruxelles in 1986 and at Université Grenoble in 1990. From October 1989 to February 1990, she was employed as a professeur invité (visiting professor) at Université Clermont II, where she lectured on Polish literature and culture. In 1991, she was appointed associate professor at WSP. She enjoyed further research visits to Université Libre de Bruxelles in 1992 and to Université Paris-Nord (Villetaneuse) in 1993. She was involved in the international research team Le groupe du travail sur les récits de vie (from 1994) and Die Gruppe EuroAutoTexte (from 1995). In 1995, she was made state appointed professor and full professor at WSP. She was made head of the Department of Western European Literatures at the Institute of Neophilology in the late 1990s. During this period she became involved in the Literary History Commission of the Krakow Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). She published reviews and articles in journal including "Kultura i Społeczeństwo" (1995, 2008, and 2010), "Przegląd Humanistyczny" (1996), "Rocznik Naukowo-Dydaktyczny. Prace Romanistyczne" (1997), "Zdanie" (1997), "Annales Academiae Paedagogicae Cracoviensis. Studia Romanica" (2001, 2003, and 2008; she was also editor of this yearbook), "Przestrzenie Teorii" (2002-12) and "Pamiętnik Literacki" (2013). Furthermore, she contributed numerous entries to encyclopaedias and dictionaries of literary biography. In 2005, she became a member of the Neophilological Commission of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU). She was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit and 1981 and the Medal of the Commission of National Education in 2006. She married the literary theorist and literary historian Prof. Kazimierz Bartoszyński in 1982 (he died in 2015). She lives in Krakow.
