He attended the Nicolaus Copernicus Upper-Secondary School of Communications No. 1 in Poznan, where he completed his advanced secondary education in 1974. That year he started a degree in Polish philology at the Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) in Poznan. After graduating with a master's degree in Polish philology in 1978, he was appointed assistant at the Department of Nineteenth Century Polish Literature (from 1996 the Department of Romantic Literature) at the Institute of Polish Philology (IFP). In subsequent years he continued to research on literary history and nineteenth-century literary criticism, as well as on Romantic theatre. He published articles, reviews and critical editions of texts in journals including "Pamiętnik Teatralny" (1980), "Pamiętnik Literacki" (1985–86) and "Studia Polonistyczne" (1985). In 1987, he published an article (using the pseudonym Jan Prot) Od klasycyzmu. He subsequently took up a post as a lecturer. He continued to publish scholarly texts in journals including "Pamiętnik Literacki" (1993 and 1996), as well as in "Polonistyka" (1993, 1996, 1999, and 2009). In 2001, he was awarded a habilitation degree from UAM for his study Walka o rząd dusz. Studia o literaturze i polityce Wielkiej Emigracji (The Struggle for Hearts and Minds: Studies on the literature and politics of the Great Polish Emigration). He was made associate professor at UAM and from 2002 to 2009 he co-edited the literary series, "Seria Literacka", of the Poznan Polish studies yearbook "Poznańskie Studia Polonistyczne". Each was published as a monographic issue bearing a separate title. He was also active as a scholarly editor, with his work including preparing alongside J. Brzozowski a critical edition of Juliusz Słowacki's poetry. He was likewise involved in literary documentation projects, producing bibliographies and biographies. From 2002 to 2011 he was director of the specialist study programme in librarianship and documentation at the Institute for Polish Philology at UAM. He was made state-appointed professor in the humanities in 2008. In 2001, he joined the Editorial Council of the Torun-based journal "Sztuka Edycji". He led the research project Nowy Korbut. Adam Mickiewicz – bibliografia podmiotowa (The New Korbut: Adam Mickiewicz – a specialist bibliography) that was conducted between 2011 and 2016 at the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology at UAM. It was funded by the National Humanities Development Program and resulted in the volume Bibliografia literatury polskiej. Nowy Korbut (Bibliography of Polish Literature: New Korbut). (Vol. 10, Part 1: Adam Mickiewicz – Twórczość [Adam Mickiewicz: Works] is in print). As part of a grant awarded by the National Humanities Development Programme in 2015 in the "Tradition" section, he started working on a new critical edition of Juliusz Słowacki's Król-Duch (King-Spirit). He received the individual UAM Rector's prize (second class) in 1981, 1994 and 2002 in recognition of his scholarly achievements, as well as the collective prize (third class) in 2011.
