BIO
Born on 16 December 1939 into a family of workers in the village of Kretki in today's Kuyavian-Pomeranian; son of Emil Netz and Helena, née Kamińska. He spent his childhood in Kretki and then in Lubań, Lower Silesian voivodeship, with his family having moved there in 1946. He attended the Grammar School in Lubań from 1954, editing the school newspaper "Plejada". In 1955, he moved to Katowice, where he attended the W. Piecek TPD (Society of Friends of Children) Grammar School No. 2. He made his debut in 1957 with the poems Daleka (Far away) and Imię (Name), which appeared in the weekly "Poglądy" (no. 23). After completing advanced secondary education in 1958, he spent a year working at a coal mine in Katowice before starting a degree in Polish philology at the Higher School of Education (WSP) in Katowice. From 1962 to 1984 he regularly collaborated with "Poglądy", publishing poems, translations and reviews in the periodical. In 1963, he published his first short stories, Portrety rodzinne: Dziedzictwo (Family Portraits: Childhood) and Ballada o stryjku Sylwestrze (The Ballad of Uncle Sylwester), which appeared in "Tygodnik Kulturalny" (no. 5). From 1965 to 1971 he worked in the Literary Section of Polish Radio in Katowice. In 1968, he received a master's degree from the University of Silesia (UŚ), which was established following the merger of the Higher School of Education and the Katowice branch of the Jagiellonian University. That year he joined the ruling Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) and the Polish Journalists Association (SDP), remaining a member until 1982. He was a member of the Polish Writers' Union (ZLP) from 1969 to 1995, serving for a period as the head of the Youth Circle, while in 1986 he joined the Board of the Katowice Branch. From 1972 to 1981 he worked at the weekly "Panorama", serving initially as head of the culture section (1973-78), then deputy editor-in-chief (1978-80) and editor (1980-81). He published numerous interviews, translations, film reviews, book reviews and columns in the periodical, including in 1981 the regular column Pod poprzeczką (Under the Bar, using the name EFEN). He also published articles, columns, film reviews and translations in periodicals including the monthly "Warmia i Mazury" (1973-78), "Kalendarz Młodych" (1976-80), "Wieczór" (from 1976; including in 1990 the regular column Notatnik antyagitatora [Anti-Agitator's Notebook]), "Życie Literackie" (1976-80), "Kronika Bielska-Białej" (in 1977 the regular column Golono strzyżono [Shaved cut]). He was literary director of the Silesia Film Studio from 1973 to 1975. He continued to collaborate with radio stations as an author and adaptor of many radio plays. In 1977, he published his first translations of Hungarian literature. From 1996 he focused primarily on translations of the prose of Sándor Marái. He joined the Association of Polish Translators (STP) in 1981. He was not approved to work as a journalist during martial law, which was imposed in December 1981, thus he worked for three years as a teacher of Hungarian at Grammar School No. X in Katowice. From 1983 to 1990 he published numerous film reviews (likewise as EFEN and (FEN)) in the weekly "Tak i Nie", where he was also head of the literary section. He also returned to the biweekly "Poglądy", serving on its editorial board from 1983 to 1984. He was in Budapest from September 1985 to February 1986 on a joint fellowship awarded by the Hungarian and Polish Ministries of Culture. In 1987, he received the Pegaz, awarded by the Żak Coastal Region Student Club, in recognition of his translations of poetry. From 1990 to 1999 he returned to work at Polish Radio in Katowice. In 1992, he joined the Upper Silesian Literary Society (Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Literackie). In 1993, he received the cultural prize of the Mayor of the City of Katowice. In 1995, he joined the editorial board of the socio-cultural monthly "Śląsk", where he was deputy editor until 2014. In 2014/15 he was head of the poetry and prose section. He published numerous articles, translations, books reviews and film reviews in the journal (including the regular column Poza kadrem [Out of shot] from 2000 to 2013). In 1997, he was made an Honorary Citizen of Lubań. In 2005, he co-founded with Beata Netz the Ad Rem Television and Public Relations Agency, which was based in Katowice. He collaborated with the bimonthly "Topos" from 2007 to 2014. He received the Gold Cross of Merit and the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis in 2005. He died on 2015 in Katowice, where he is buried at the cemetery on Francuska Street. In 2017, Salon Polsko-Węgierski (Polish-Hungarian Salon) opened in Feliks Netz's former home. Named after him, the institution provides a location for literary, artistic and scientific exchanges involving Poles and Hungarians.
