BIO
Born on 4 January 1956 in Szczecin; son of the prose writer, poet and dramatist Ryszard Liskowacki, and the Polish language teacher Daniela, née Maj. He attended the Adam Asnyk Grammar School (No. V) in Szczecin from 1970. It was during this period that he wrote his first literary works. He was co-editor of the school magazine "Kaktus" between 1971 and 1974, publishing column pieces, short stories and cartoons there (using pseudonyms including Aleksander, and K. Tokolwiek). He made his debut as a poet in 1974 with Spotkanie (A Meeting) and U fotografa (At the Photographer's), poems that appeared under the name Art. in the Klub Młodych Autorów (Young Author's Club) section of the weekly "Na Przełaj" (no. 4). He considers the poems Odblask (Reflection) and Zapomnienie. Motyw I (Forgetting. Motif I), published in 1975 in the weekly "Kamena" (no. 1), to be his debut proper. After completing advanced secondary education in 1974 he took a degree in Polish philology, with a major in theatre studies, at the Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) in Poznan. As a student he was actively involved in literary life, collaborating with the on-stage newspaper "Struktury" and writing the script for the play Jeszcze trochę snu… (Just a Bit Longer in Bed...), which premiered in Poznan at Jan Theatre in 1977. He graduated from UAM with a master's degree in 1974. He received several prizes and distinctions in the J. Śpiewak National Poetry Competition in 1975, 1976 and 1977. In 1975, he joined the Youth Cirle of the Polish Writers' Union (ZLP) Poznan branch. His poems appeared in the periodicals "Poezja" (1976), "Nowy Wyraz" (1977-79), "Tygodnik Kulturalny" (1977), and the satirical magazine "Szpilki" (1977-79). He returned to Szczecin in 1978 where he served as chairman of the local ZLP Youth Circle, while also co-founding the publication series Szczecińska Seria Literacka "Arkusze" (1979-80), which was published by the Circle in cooperation with the Voivodeship and Municipal Public Library in Szczecin. He collaborated with several Szczecin-based newspapers and weeklies. Between 1978 and 1981, he published numerous articles, poems, theatre reviews, reportage pieces, interviews and translations from both Russian and English in the weekly "Jantar". His contributions included a review of premiere performances in the 1978/79 theatre season and responses to readers' letters, including some using the initials ADL. He also published notes using the name Rafał. His texts also appeared in the theatre magazine "Scena" (1980-86), the daily newspaper "Kurier Szczeciński" (from 1982; between 1990 and 2008 he was head of the cultural section, later the society and culture section; he used various by-lines including : Adela, (płk), Z.A. Mieszany; from 1991 he also contributed sports columns as (Były Junior)), in the weekly "Morze i Ziemia" (1983-90; here he was a regular contributor; he also used the by-lines and names: (a), (ad), ADL, (al), Konrad Danielewicz, Marek Strzelczyk, Monika Sas, and in the theatre newspaper "Goniec Teatralny" (1990). In the early 1980s he started publishing children's stories. For many years he served on the jury of the Polish Review of Small Theatre Forms, later known as the Kontrapunkt Festival, in Szczecin. In 1995, he served on the jury of the National Competition for Staging Contemporary Polish Drama (Ogólnopolski Konkurs na Wystawienie Polskiej Sztuki Współczesnej). In the 1990s he began collaborating with the Szczecin-based Pleciuga Puppet Theatre and the city's Współczesny Theatre. In 1995, as a journalist at the newspaper "Kurier Szczeciński", he relaunched the annual Bursztynowy Pierscień (Amber Ring) public vote for the year's best actor and best production at theatres in Szczecin. He gave it a new format, turning it into the Szczecin theatre prize. He often chaired the Nomination Commission and the jury. He was named Journalist of the Year in 1993 and won the Prize of the Mayor of the City of Szczecin in 1997, which was awarded by the Journalists' Association of the Republic of Poland (Stowarzyszenie Dziennikarzy RP). He joined the Polish Writers' Association (SPP) in 1996 and was chair of the Association's Szczecin Branch until 1999. He was involved in the Szczecin branch of the Journalists' Association of the Republic of Poland. He continued to publish literary works, articles, sketches and short stories, as well as numerous theatre reviews, in newspapers and periodicals including "Kurier Szczeciński", the bi-monthly "Pogranicze" (from 1995; here he was a regular contributor), "Sycyna" (1995-98), "Teatr" (from 1996; there he was a regular contributor), "Wiadomości Kulturalne" (1996-97), "Twórczość" (from 1997), "Gazeta Wyborcza" (2002-03), the quarterly "Migotania, przejaśnienia" (which became "Migotania" in 2011; he became a regular contributor in 2002), "FA-art" (2005 and 2007), "Latarnia Morska" (he became regular contributor, likewise to the online version, in 2006 ), "Borussia" (2014 and 2017), "eleWator" (from 2015; also using the initials: ADL), and "Odra" (2016-17). In 2000, he received the Zbigniew Herbert Szczecin Literary Prize and in 2001 the City of Szczecin Artistic Prize, which was awarded by the mayor of the city. He was named "Siewca Roku 2001" (Sower of the Year 2001) in the culture category, with the prize awarded by the Voivodeship Council of the Polish People's Party (PSL) in Szczecin. He received the honorary title Ambassador of Szczecin 2002, having been nominated by a chapter selected by the mayor of the city. He has collaborated regularly with television and radio stations. Between 2002 and 2006, he presented forty-four episodes of the programme "Instytut Kulturalnych Sporów" (Institute of Cultural Disputes), alongside Grzegorz Fedorowski, on the Szczecin regional station of Polish Television (TVP). He received the 60th anniversary prize of Polish Radio in Szczecin in 2005 in recognition of his achievements as an author of radio plays. He became chair of the "Kurier Szczeciński" group in 2008, serving as the daily newspaper's editor-in-chief until 2010. In 2012, he became chair of the Henryk Bereza Literary Foundation, also serving on the jury of the Henryk Bereza Literary Prize "Czytane w maszynopisie" (Read as Typescript). He was also editor of the foundation's book series koLekcja eleWatora. In 2012, he also joined the jury of the national Gryfia Literary Prize for Female Authors, which was established jointly by "Kurier Szczeciński", the University of Szczecin, the Mayor of the City of Szczecin and the Marshall of the Western Pomeranian Voivodeship. He was awarded the 2013 Wladyslaw and Nelli Turzanski Foundation Prize by the Toronto-based organization for his outstanding contributions to Polish culture in 2011/12. In 2015, he was appointed to the jury of the Living Classics Competition for Staging Old Works of Polish Literature ("Klasyka żywa" konkurs na Inscenizację Dawnych Dzieł Literatury Polskiej), which was organized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (MKiDN) together with the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute to mark the 250th anniversary of public theatre in Poland. He was awarded the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis in 2005. He married the philologist, theatre studies scholar and librarian Jolanta Garstecka in 1980. They have a son, Konrad (b. 1981), who is a lawyer. He lives in Szczecin.
