Born on 22 March 1949 in Człuchów; son of the nurse Teresa Skuczyńska. From 1963 to 1967, he was a pupil at the Grammar School in Czersk. He then studied Polish philology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) in Torun. He graduated with a master's degree in 1972 and subsequently spent two years as an assistant at the Higher School of Teaching in Zielona Góra. In 1974, he started working at the Department of Polish Romanticism and Positivism at the Institute of Polish Literature (ILP) at UMK. His research focused on nineteenth-century literature, particularly dramas and theatre from the Romantic era. In 1976, he was a lecturer for six months at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald, East Germany. During this period, he made his debut in the press with the piece Czy druga reforma teatru? [A second theatre reform?], which appeared in "Dialog" (no. 8). His debut scholarly article, Przestrzeń w "Lilli Wenedzie" Juliusza Słowackiego [Space in Juliusz Słowacki's "Lilla Weneda"], appeared in 1978 in the volume Przestrzeń i literatura [Space and Literature]. From 1979 to 1982, he regularly published theatre reviews and reports from theatre festivals in the newspaper "Gazeta Pomorska". In 1982, he defended his doctoral thesis Przestrzeń teatralna w polskim dramacie romantycznym [Theatrical Space in Polish Romantic Theatre] at UMK. It was supervised by Prof. Irena Sławińska. He was subsequently appointed lecturer. In 1983/84, he took a postgraduate course for Polish language tutors at Polonicum Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners at the University of Warsaw (UW). He was chair of the Torun branch of the Society for Theatre Culture (Towarzystwo Kultury Teatralnej) from 1986 to 1992. In 1990/91, he was a lecturer at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. He published essays on theatre and reviews in periodicals including "PAL Przegląd Artystyczno-Literacki" (1992–94). From 1992 to 1997, he also worked at a lecturer at the Teachers' College in Włocławek. He was awarded a habilitation degree in 1993 for his study Odmiany form dramatycznych w okresie romantyzmu. Słowacki— Mickiewicz— Krasiński [Varieties of Romantic-era Dramatic Forms: Słowacki, Mickiewicz, Krasiński]. That year, and in 1994 and 2001, he served as director of the Extramural Programme in Polish Philology at UMK. During this period, he was appointed to the jury of the Konrad Górski and Marta Górska Prize, serving until 2006. In 1996, he took up the post of associate professor at the Department of Drama, Theatre and Film at the Institute of Polish Literature at UMK. From 1999, he was head of department and then with the creation of the Chair of Cultural Studies at UMK in 2011, he became head of the Department of Drama and Theatre, serving until 2014. In 2001, he was made state-appointed professor. The same year, he was awarded the UMK Rector's Prize – First Class in recognition of his academic achievements. In 2001, he was director of the Postgraduate Programme in Polish Philology at UMK. From 2001 to 2010, he was a member of the chapter of the S.B. Linde Literary Prize. Between 2002 and 2007, he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities at the Higher School of Humanities and Economics (now the Cuiavian University) in Włocławek. In parallel, from 2002 until 2004, he was director of the Postgraduate Programme in Contemporary Audiovisual Culture at UMK. From 2004 to 2008, he was editor-in-chief of the publications of Torun Scientific Society. In 1974, he married the Polish philologist Małgorzata Piłat. They have two children, Natalia (b. 1978) and Miłosz (ur. 1979). He lives in Torun.
