BIO
Born on 15 October 1950 in Gliwice; son of the civil servant Lech Woźniakowski, and the head of a works canteen Wanda, née Szrank. He attended the W. Styczyński Grammar School No. III in Gliwice, where he completed his advanced secondary education in 1968. That year, he started a degree in Polish philology at the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow, where he also joined the Polish Students' Association (ZSP). He graduated with a master's degree in Polish philology in 1973 and joined the Polish Teachers' Union (ZNP). In the following years, he was associated with the Institute of Polish Philology (IFP) at UJ and was employed in the following positions: trainee assistant, assistant (from 1974) and senior research assistant (from 1975) at the Department of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Literature, and then at the Department of Twentieth Century Literature. Between 1973 and 1975, he was a member of the editorial board of "Życie Literackie", where in 1973 he published his first review, Co w Płotwie piszczy? (What is squaking in the rafters?; no. 20), which discussed Czesław Sowa Pawłowski's novel Cesarz miłowany… (Beloved Emperor...). He considers his debut piece of scholarship to be the article Obchody mickiewiczowskie w Wilnie w roku 1940 (The Mickiewicz Anniversary in Vilnius in 1940), which appeared in 1974 in "Ruch Literacki" (vol. 5). That same year, he joined the ruling Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR), remaining a member until its dissolution in January 1990. In 1975, he joined the Kuźnica Club of Cultural Creators and Activists (Klub Twórców i Działaczy Kultury – later Association/ Stowarzyszenie), publishing articles and reviews in its periodical "Zdanie" (intermittently 1978–88). He was awarded a doctoral degree from UJ in 1980 for his dissertation Między literaturą a ideologią. Proza polska 1918–1939 wobec problematyki ruchu robotniczego (Between Literature and Ideology: Polish prose and the workers' movement, 1918-1939), which was supervised by Prof. Marian Stępień). He subsequently worked as a lecturer at the IFP at UJ, where he was also director of the Postgraduate Programme in Journalism from 1981 to 1984. As part of a direct exchange programme between UJ and the University of Vilnius, he was a visiting researcher in the Lithuanian SSR on three occasions (1981, 1982 and 1987), conducting research on the cultural life of the Polish minority in the Vilnius region. He gave a series of lecturers for students of Polish at the University of Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1989. In 1990, he presented his study Między ubezwłasnowolnieniem a opozycją. Związek Literatów Polskich w latach 1949–1959 (Between Incapacitation and Opposition: The Polish Writers' Union, 1949-1959), for consideration for a habilitation degree. The work was a shortened version of his monograph Działalność Związku Literatów Polskich w latach 1944–1959 (The Polish Writers' Union (ZLP), 1944-1959), which the publishing house Wydawnictwo Literackie cancelled as a result of the extended publishing process. The Council of the Faculty of Philology at UJ did not initiate proceedings for awarding a habilitation degree. From 1991, he was associated with the Higher School of Education in Krakow (WSP; in 1999 it became the Pedagogical Academy – AP, and in 2008 the Pedagogical University of Krakow – UP), where he was appointed lecturer (initially in a part-time role) at the Chair of Library Studies and Research Information. In 1992, following his permanent appointment to the post, he resigned his position at UJ. He joined the Tadeusz Kotarbiński Association for Secular Culture, which was established in 1992. In the 2000s, he joined the Praesdium of the Voivodeship Council of the Association's Krakow branch, which is named after Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński. In 1993/94, he gave lectures and taught practical seminars on the history of Polish literature at the Chair in Polish Philology of the State University in Grodno, Belarus. He joined the Press Studies Commission of the Krakow Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1994, joining its Board in 1996. In subsequent terms, he served as scientific secretary (to 2003), deputy chair (to 2007), and then chair. He was also involved from 1988 as editorial secretary, commissioning editor and author of articles with the commission's yearbook "Rocznik Historii Prasy Polskiej". In 1998, he was awarded a habilitation degree, with a specialism in literary culture, from Krakow WSP for his study W kręgu jawnego piśmiennictwa literackiego Generalnego Gubernatorstwa (1939–1945) (On official literary publications in the General Government, 1939-1945). In 1998/99, he was director of the Postgraduate Programme in Library Studies and Research Information at WSP. In 1999, he was nominated for the post of associate professor at AP and was appointed Chair in Periodical Press and Literary Culture (which was later renamed the Institute of Library Studies and Research Information, and then later the Institute of Research Information and Library Studies). Between 2004 and 2007, he also taught at the Chair of Journalism and Social Communication at the private Edukacja College of Management in Wroclaw. He was a member of the Scientific Councils of the Opole-based periodical "Media i Medioznawstwo" (2011-2014), the Krakow-based quarterly "Zeszyty Prasoznawcze" (from 2012; he published articles here in 1987 and 1996–97), and the e-quarterly "Naukowy Przegląd Dziennikarski" (from 2014), as well as the Programme Council of "Forum Myśli Wolnej" (from 2012). He also published studies and articles in "Annales Academiae Paedagogicae Cracoviensis. Studia ad Bibliothecarum Scientiam Pertinentia" (intermittently 2001–14; co-editor of vol. 12). In 2010, he was made state-appointed professor in humanities. In 2013, he was appointed Chair in Book and Press Studies at the Institute of Research Information and Library Studies at UP (following restructuring, it became the Chair of Print and Digital Media at the Institute of Information Studies at the Pedagogical University). He was made full professor at UP in 2015. He received the Polish Teachers' Union Gold Medal in 1990 and the Medal of the Commission of National Education in 1999. He married the Polish and theatre studies scholar Elżbieta Wajda in 1986. He was widowed in 2009. He lives in Krakow.
