Born on 8 June 1956 in Warsaw; daughter of Jan Surowiec and Teodozja, née Bakalarczyk. She spent her childhood in Warsaw, where she attended the Tadeusz Reytan Grammar School No. VI from 1971 to 1975. She studied Polish philology at the University of Warsaw (UW) from 1975 to 1979. She made her debut in 1977 in "Nowy Wyraz" (no. 11) with a translation of excerpts of Boris Uspenskij's A Poetics of Composition (Polish: Poetyka kompozycji). In the subsequent issue (no. 12), she published the article W obronie młodej prozy. (Na marginesie polemik i dyskusji) (In Defence of Young Prose Writers: On the margins of polemics and debates). After graduating with a master's degree, she was employed from 1979 as an assistant at the Department of Literary Theory and Poetics (which in 2009 became the Department of Poetics, Literary Theory and Methodology of Literary Studies) at the Institute of Polish Philology (IFP) at UW. Her research focused on twentieth-century literary studies that were inspired by phenomenology and linguistics. She published pieces of literary criticism, translations and reviews in periodicals including "Przegląd Humanistyczny" (1978–2000). Between 1981 and 1989, she collaborated with the literary monthly "Miesięcznik Literacki" as a reviewer, while from 1986 to 2013 she was a reviewer of literature and non-fiction with "Nowe Książki" (where she also published using the pen name Danuta Bakalarczyk). She defended her doctoral thesis, Ingardenowska filozofia literatury a neoidealizm (Ingarden's Philosophy of Literature and Neoidealism), at UW in 1988. It was supervised by Prof. Eugeniusz Czaplejewicz. She was subsequently appointed lecturer. That year, she received the Association of Polish Translators (STP) prize for her translation of a collection of essays by Sergey Averintsev, Na skrzyżowaniu tradycji. (Szkice o literaturze i kulturze wczesnobizantyjskiej) (At the Crossroads of Tradition: Essays on Early Byzantine Literature and Culture). From 1997 to 2008, she also lectured at the Faculty of Polish Philology at the private Pułtusk Academy of Humanities (Akademia Humanistyczna im. A. Gieysztora). She was awarded a habilitation degree from UW in 2000 for her study Granice literatury i pogranicza literaturoznawstwa. Fenomenologia Romana Ingardena w świetle filozofii lingwistycznej (The Limits of Literature and the Borderlands of Literary Studies: Roman Ingarden's Phenomenology in the context of linguistic philosophy). She was appointed associate professor at UW in 2002. She published works in literary history and literary theory in journals including "Teksty Drugie" (2001-13) and "Przestrzenie Teorii" (from 2004), as well as numerous book reviews in the online weekly "Latarnik" (2001). She joined the scientific board of the journal "Przegląd Filozoficzno-Literacki" in 2002. She was involved in the College of Inter-area Individual Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the Artes Liberales Academy at UW. She was appointed head of the Department of Poetics, Literary Theory and Methodology of Literary Studies at IFP at UW in 2005. She was also a member of the editorial board of the international periodical "Interpretations. European Research Project for Poetica & Hermeneutics". She was made state-appointed professor in 2010. That year, she joined the editorial board of the yearbook "Colloquia Humanistica", which is published by the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IS PAN). In 2011, she was appointed to the scentific council of the journal "Śląskie Studia Polonistyczne". She was involved in the activities of the Committee on Literary Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences(KNolL PAN) from 2011, becoming a member of its praesidium in 2015. She was appointed chair of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Polish Literature at UW in 2012. The following year, she joined the editorial committee of the literary studies journal of the Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University "Problemi sučasnogo literaturoznavstva". In 2014, she became academic editor of a series of translations of Russian scientific and non-fiction literature that was published in cooperation with the SEDNO Publishing House and the Centre for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding. In 2015, she was appointed to the editorial committee of the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences' (IBL PAN) publication series Z dziejów form artystycznych w literaturze polskiej (On the History of Artistic Forms in Polish Literature). She twice received the prize of the Minister of Higher of Education and Technology (2005 and 2007). She lives in Warsaw.
