Born on 20 December 1951 in Gdansk; son of Stefan Smaszcz, an organist who also worked for a period at the Gdansk shipyards, and Pelagia, née Pawlak, a hairdresser. In 1954, he moved to the Podlasie region after his father faced persecution from the Deapartment of Security (UB). Owing to his family moving home regularly, he was a pupil at five primary schools from 1958 before joining the Tadeusz Kościuszko Grammar School in Bielsk Podlaski in 1965, where he completed his advanced secondary education in 1969. He then studied Polish philology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) in Torun, where he graduated with a master's degree in 1974. He wrote a thesis, „Srebrne i czarne” Jana Lechonia (Jan Lechoń's "Silver and Black"), which was supervised by Prof. Artur Hutnikiewicz. He moved to Bialystok in 1974, where he was employed until 1984 at the Institute of Polish Philology of the Bialystok Branch of the University of Warsaw (UW). In his research and literary criticism, he concentrated primarily on Polish poetry from various epochs. In 1983, he started collaborating with Father Jan Twardowski, a relationship that shaped the central focus of his interests. From 1974 to 1980, he was a member of the Polish Teachers' Union (ZNP). He was involved in the Bialystok literary scene. He made his debut in 1975 with a review of Maria Wołkońska's Pamiętnik (Memoir). His review, published under the title Bohaterka od Boya (A Heroine of Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński), appeared in the Bialystok-based periodical "Kontrasty" (no. 5), with which he continued to collaborate as a critic until 1980 (using the by-lines (W.S.) and W.S.). He considers the essays Lechoń and Liebert published in 1977 in the monthly "Poezja" (nos 4 and 9 respectively) to constitute his debut proper as a literary critic. From October 1975 to 1977, he was a member of the Bakałarz literary group, which was founded by Jan Leończuk at the Polish Teachers' Union Bakałarz Literary Club. He collaborated with the Polish Writers' Union (ZLP) Literary Club in Bialystok, including as co-editor of the ZLP Literary Club's chronicle Rewers (Verso) in 1979 . At the same time, he was involved in the Warsaw literary group associated with Jerzy Leszin Koperski and the student biweekly "Nowy Medyk" (1975-77). In 1980/81, he was a member of the Independent Self-governing Trade Union Solidarity. He joined the Warsaw Branch of the Polish Writers' Union (ZLP) in 1984. From that year on, he focused primarily on literary criticism. He published numerous articles, reviews and translations in periodicals including "Literatura" (1976), "Głos Nauczycielski" (1977 and 1979; using by-lines including W.S.), "Poezja" (intermittently 1977-90, and 1998), "Tygodnik Kulturalny" (1977-79), the monthly "Białostocki Informator Kulturalny «Zdarzenia»" (1978-80; using by-lines including the pseudonym Dominik Pawlak; he was also on the editorial board), "Więź" (1980 and 1984-85), "Twórczość" (1980), "Kierunki" (1981-90; where he became a regular contributor in 1983), "Kultura" (1981), "Kurier Podlaski" (intermittently 1984-90), "Słowo Powszechne" (intermittently 1985-92), "Literatura na Świecie" (1988), "Krajobrazy" (1989), "Kultura i Życie" (1989), "Akcent" (1990), "Znad Wilii" (1990 and 1997), "Że" (1990), the "Przegląd Polski" supplement of the New York-based "Nowy Dziennik" (1993), "Słowo” (1993-97), "Dziennik Kijowski" (1994 and 1998-99), "Inspiracje" (1994-2000; where he became a regular contributor in 1991), "Krasnogruda" (1995), "Tytuł" (1995), "Biuletyn Literacki" (1996 and 2000), "Akant" (1998-99), the monthly of the Bialystok archdiocese "Czas Miłosierdzia" (1998-2002; he became co-editor in 1999), "Poezja Dzisiaj" (intermittently 1999-2017), "Okolica Poetów" (2000), "Parnasik" (2000), "Nowa Myśl Polska" (2004), "Gazeta Polska" (2007 and 2010-12), "Znaj" (2009-10), and "Tygodnik Powszechny" (2011). In 1988/89, he was editor at the Catholic publishing house Wydawnictwo PAX, before working with the Bialystok-based Wydawnictwo Łuk (which in 2001 became Studio Wydawnicze Unikat) and Instytut Wydawniczy PAX in Warsaw (to 2002). From 1990 to 1995, he again worked at the Institute of Polish Philology at the Bialystok Branch of UW. He founded the W. Kazanecki prize, which was awarded by the Mayor of Bialystok from 1992. From 1996 to 2004, he lectured on literature at the Higher Archdiocese Spiritual Seminary in Bialystok. He took numerous international trips in connection with his literary work: between 1987 and 1989, he travelled through the USSR, from Armenia to the Gulf of Finland; his essays based on the journey appeared mainly in "Kierunki"; between 1989 and 1991, he visited Ukraine, which led to him becoming a translator of Ukrainian poetry; between 1991 and 1993, he visited Italy, primarily Tuscany and Rome, including following in the footsteps of Adam Mickiewicz, while in 2000 he participated in the Great Jubilee in Rome; in 2001, he travelled around the Lviv region of Ukraine, following in the footsteps of Franciszek Karpiński and Father Karol Antoniewicz; in 2006, he visited the Côte d'Azur where he lectured on the works of Father Jan Twardowski in parishes run by Polish priests; that year he also visited the Holy Land; and from 2008 to 2010, he was in Switzerland to work on the expanded edition of his book on Adam Mickiewicz. He occasionally collaborated with the Polish Radio's Bialystok Regional Station and the Bialystok Branch of Polish Television (TVP). He received the UW Rector's Prize (2nd class) in 1981 and 1991, the W. Pietrzak Youth Prize in 1984 and the W. Pietrzak Literary Prize in 1997, the Bialystok Voivode's Prize in 1989, the W. Kazanecki Award of the Mayor of the City of Bialystok in 1998, the Creative Prize of the Marshal of the Podlaskie Voivodeship in 2000, the F. Karpiński National Literary Award for promoting Christian values, which was awarded by the Podlasie branch of the Catholic Civitas Christiana Society in 2000, and the W. Hulewicz Prize in 2005. He was awarded the Bishop Ignacy Krasicki Medal Godzien kraj kochania (For love of country), awarded by the Olsztyn Branch of the Polish Writers' Union, in 1979; the Most Holy Cross Decoration Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, awarded by Pope John Paul II in 2000, and the Gold Cross of Merit in 2000. He married the civil servant Elżbieta Fiedorczuk in 1974; the have three children: Beatrycze, Rafał and Dominika. He lives in Bialystok.
