ŁOZIŃSKI Mikołaj

Born on 26 February 1980 in Warsaw; son of the sound engineer and documentary film maker Marcel Łoziński, and the mechanical engineer Tamara née Sobczak. Grandson of the journalist, columnist and translator Roman Kornecki (born Salomon Stramer), and the mathematician and journalist Eugenia Łozińska; brother of the screenwriter and film director Paweł Łoziński. He attended the Bednarska Social Grammar School No. I. He made his debut in 1988 with the prose piece Płacz Watermana (Waterman's Tears), which was dedicated to the school's Polish teacher and poet Cezary Geroń, which appeared in the weekly "Topos" (no. 4). After completing his advanced secondary education in 1999, he moved to Paris, where his future wife, Julia Staniszewska, studied at the faculty of multimedia at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Before enrolling as a student, he worked in various jobs, including as a translator for the French-German television station ARTE, while also earning additional income as a painter and decorator, and as an assistant to a blind female psychoanalyst. Between 2000 and 2004, he studied sociology at the Sorbonne. He had a keen interest in photography and earned additional income by having his photos published in the press, including in the Polish weekly "Przekrój". He returned to Poland in 2004. In 2006, he published his debut novel, Reisefieber, for which he received the 2007 Prize of the Kościelski Foundation. He continued write in the following years. In 2007, he was awarded a Homines Urbani grant from the Villa Decius Association and the Polish Book Institute for writers and translators. The same year, he was an assistant director alongside his brother on their father's film A gdyby tak się stało (A What if that Happened). In 2010, he was awarded a grant from Akademie Schloss Solitude. The following year, he was a winner in the screenplay competition launched by Studio Munk – the Polish Filmmakers Association. In 2013, he wrote the commentary for the film Ja kinuję (I do cinema), featuring previously unknow private film material from the 1920s belonging to the renowned photographer Zofia Chomętowska. In 2015, he was awarded the Adam Włodek Prize of the Wisława Szymborska Foundation. In 2017, he held a grant from the Jan Michalski Foundation, while in 2022 he was a resident writer on a project by fuded by ERGO Hestia and the Wisława Szymborska Foundation. He lived in Szymborska's Krakow apartment and gathered material for his novel Stramerowie (The Stramers). He married the visual artist and photographer Julia Staniszewska in 2017. They have two twin sons, Emil and Roman. He lives in Warsaw.
