BIO
Born on 26 December 1962 in Bydgoszcz; son of the civil servant Janusz Markowski and Barbara, née Obrzeżgiewicz. He attended the L. Waryński Grammar School in Bydgoszcz (which from 1992 was named after C.K. Norwid), where he completed his advanced secondary education in 1981. That year he left for Krakow, where he studied Polish philology, with a major in theatre studies, at the Jagiellonian University (UJ). After graduating with a master's in philology in 1986, the following year he was appointed to the post of assistant at the Chair of Literary Theory at the Institute of Polish Philology at UJ. He focused on interpretations of philosophical works through a literary studies lens before later conducting interdisciplinary research. He translated and edited works by international literary studies scholars, while also producing his own studies in literary criticism and essays. He made his debut in 1988 with a review of Northrop Frye's book The Great Code: The Bible and Literature, which appeared in the journal "Pamiętnik Literacki" (no. 3). The same year he also published a review titled Głos Pana Go(Lema) (Mr Go(Lem's) voice), which discussed Stanisław Bereś' book Rozmowy ze Stanisławem Lemem (Conversations with Stanisław Lem). Markowski's review appeared in the journal "Znak" (no. 11). His articles, reviews, translations, essays and column pieces appeared in periodicals including "Teksty Drugie" (from 1990), "Znak" (1994, 1996-97, and 2000-01), "Literatura na Świecie" (intermittently 1996-2005), "Tygodnik Powszechny" (1997 and again from 2000; in 2006-07 his regular column Z drugiej strony (On the other hand/From the second page) appeared in this weekly where he was also editor of the literary magazine "Książki w Tygodniku") and in "Res Publica Nowa" (2000-03; including the series of articles "Słownik filozoficzny" [Philosophical dictionary]). He was awarded a doctorate from UJ in 1996 for his dissertation Efekt inskrypcji. Jacques Derrida i literatura (The Inscription Effect: Jacques Derrida and literature), which was supervised by Prof. Henryk Markiewicz. He was subsequently employed as a lecturer. He received a habilitation degree from UJ in 1998 for his study Nietzsche. Filozofia interpretacji (Nietzsche: The philosophy of interpretation). The same year he joined the editorial committee of the publication series Horyzonty Nowoczesności, which was published by Universitas (Towarzystwo Autorów i Wydawców Prac Naukowych "Universitas"). In 1998, he also began editing, alongside Krzysztof Kłosiński, the Polish edition of Roland Barthes' collected writings (Pisma), which was published by the Warsaw-based publishers KR, with the final volume appearing in 2001. That year he also received the journal "Literatura na Świecie" prize in comparative studies. Between 1999 and 2002, he served on the editorial team of the journal "Pamiętnik Literacki". From 2000 he was employed at the Chair of Literary Anthropology and Cultural Studies at UJ. In 2001, he was made state-appointed professor and associate professor at UJ. Following the restructuring of the UJ Faculty of Philology in 2004 and the subsequent formation of the Faculty of Polish Studies, he founded the Department of International Polish Studies, becoming head in 2005. That year he was made full professor at UJ. In 2006, he was awarded the three-year "Mistrz" (Master) professorial grant from the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) to conduct the project Humanistyka po dekonstrukcji (Humanities after deconstruction). He was also a member of the Collegium Invisible Academic Society. He combined teaching and research in Poland with trips abroad. He lectured primarily on twentieth-century Polish literature and literary theory, including serving as visiting professor at the University of Stockholm in 2002, Harvard in 2002/03, and Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, in 2004. He was distinguished visiting professor at the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 2005. In 2008, he was senior fellow at the Internationales Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften in Vienna, while in 2009 he was visiting associate professor at Brown University in Providence, RI. He collaborated with Polish Television (TVP) where he was co-host of the regular show Cafe Kultura that appeared on TVP2 between 2003 and 2005, before moving to the specialist Kultura channel until 2006, where he hosted the programme's Monday edition. He also promoted cultural themes on radio shows. In 2006, he was appointed to the editorial board of the US-based journal "Slavic Review" (Urbana, IL). The following year he joined the Scientific Board of the UJ Polish Studies journal "Wielogłos". He conceived and organized the Centre for the Advanced Studies in the Humanities (CASH), which was established at UJ in 2007. He served as its director until 2010, while also co-editing the Centre's publication series Hermeneia alongside Tomasz Bilczewski from 2007. In 2009, he was appointed director of the Joseph Conrad International Literature Festival, which takes place in Krakow, and was involved in this role in subsequent editions of the event. In 2009, he was appointed to the Polish team supporting the international doctoral programme Cultural Studies in Literary Interzones that is part of the Erasmus Mundus II scheme. He left for the USA in 2010, taking up the post of Hejna Family Chair in Polish Language and Literature at the University of Illinois, Chicago, where he also became head of the Department of Slavic and Baltic Languages and Literatures, as well as director of Graduate Studies at the Department. He remained associated with UJ as a visiting professor. He was crucial to the development of cooperation between UJ and the University of Illinois, which led to the establishment of the Summer School in Polish Modernity in Krakow in 2010, which was open to US and Canadian students. He continued to teach on the summer school, giving classes on twentieth-century poetry and literary theory. In 2011, he received the Kazimierz Wyka Prize "for his achievements in the field of literary criticism and literary and artistic essay writing". He was appointed to the editorial boards of the journals "Teksty Drugie" (in 2011) and "Schulz Forum" (in 2012). He has contributed to the organization of literary festivals and other regular US-based events on Polish literature and culture, including "After Schulz" and "After Miłosz" in Chicago. In 2016, he received a prize from the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages in recognition of his outstanding contribution to scholarship. He received the Silver Cross of Merit in 2002. He lives in Chicago and Krakow.
