Born on 21 September 1955 in Wola Jasienicka; son of Kazimierz Dopart and Felicja, née Szuba. He was the winner of the 1973 Olympiad in Polish Literature and Language. The same year, he completed his advanced secondary education at the Grammar School in Brzozów in the Subcarpathian region. He the started a degree in the interdisciplinary programme in Polish philology at the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow. He made his debut as a poet in 1974 with the poem Z opowieści (From a story) in "Tygodnik Kulturalny" (no. 3) and Uczeń Archimedesa... (Archimedes' student...) in the youth magazine "Prometej" (no. 1). The latter periodical also awarded him first prize and the Promotej Laurel in the Student Poetry Fair (Studencki Jarmark Poezji) First National Poetry Debut Competition. He made his debut as a critic the same year with a review of Wiersze znad Ochrydu (Poems from the Banks of the Ohrid), an anthology of Macedonian poetry. The review appeared in the literary periodical "Życie Literackie" (nos 51-52). He published his first article, Co dolega młodej prozie (What's troubling young prose writing), in 1975 in "Życie Literackie" (no. 17). After graduating in 1977, he took up a position at the Institute of Polish Philology at UJ (later the Institute of Polish Studies and then from 2004 the Faculty of Polish Studies) at the Chair of the History of Nineteenth-Century Literature). In his research, he focused on the Romantic period, as well as on the social anthropology of literature and the cultural history of the nineteenth century. In 1982, he published his first article in this field, Koncepcja literatury mesjanicznej w prelekcjach paryskich Adama Mickiewicza (The concept of messianic literature in Adam Mickiewicz's Paris Lectures). His study appeared in "Ruch Literacki" (nos 5/6). In 1980, he joined the Independent Self-governing Trade Union Solidarity. He published in the Paris-based periodicals "Kultura" (using the pen name Wit Promiński) and "Kontakt" (as Szczepan Nowicki). He was awarded a doctoral degree in the humanities in 1986 from UJ for his dissertation Twórczość Adama Mickiewicza w kontekście sporów przełomu romantyzmu w Polsce (Adam Mickiewicz's works in the context of controversies over the breakthrough of Romanticism in Poland). He was supervised by Prof. Marian Tatar. In 1986/87, he was an extramural student at the École Pratique des Hautes Études and at the Sorbonne in Paris, taking courses on literary history and cultural anthropology. Between 1987 and 1989, he edited the occasional underground periodical "Demokracja. Niezależne pismo społeczno-polityczne". He co-edited the UJ quarterly "Universitas. Kwartalnik UJ" (1991-1999). In 1992, he was appointed chair of the Krakow branch of the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Society, serving on the editorial college of the Society's yearbook, "Wiek XIX", from 2008. Between 1998 and 2013, he also worked at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University, where he held the Chair of Romantic Literature. He also lectured at Teacher Training Colleges in Krosno, Przemyśl and Bielsko-Biała. He was awarded a habilitation degree from UJ in 1999 for his study Romantyzm polski: pluralizm prądów i synkretyzm dzieła (Polish Romanticism: The plurality of trends and the syncretism of works). He was made state-appointed professor in 2003. In 2005, he was made Chair of Polish Enlightenment and Romantic Literature at the Faculty of Polish Studies at UJ. From 2009, he edited the publication series Studia Dziewiętnastowieczne (Nineteenth Century Studies), published by Księgarnia Akademicka. He was a member of the Editorial Council of UJ Polish studies journal "Wielogłos. Pismo Wydziału Polonistyki UJ" (2006-2011). He chaired the Krakow Committee of the Olympiad in Polish Literature and Language, initiating and co-organizing a series of research and teaching-based symposia, Małe Sympozja, from 2011. He was made full professor at UJ in 2014. He mentored the Romaniticism Scientific Circle and the online doctoral journal at the Faculty of Polish Studies at UJ, "Littera/Historica". He reviewed projects submitted the the State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN), the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the National Science Centre (NCN), and Der Schweizerische Nationalfonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung. He was appointed deputy chair of the Commission for the Culture of Slavs at the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU) in 2016. He joined the Literary History Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the Polish Sociological Association. He joined the Pan Tadeusz Museum Council at the Ossoliński National Institute in Wroclaw. Between 2018 and 2023, he was chair of the President Lech Kaczyński Civic Academic Club (AKO)in Krakow. He also served on the chapter of the Pan Cogito statuette awarded by the AKO. In 2019/20, he was head of the Science Team at the Think Tank Institute in Warsaw. In 2020, he became a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU). He was a member of the the Social Committee for the Restoration of Krakow's Historic Monuments from 2021. He joined the Polish Writers' Association (SPP) in 2022. His reviews, polemics, literary criticism and pieces on film appeared in periodicals including "Życie Literackie" (1975-80), "Poezja" (1976 and 1981-1982), "Student" (1977-78), the Warsaw-based "Kultura" (1977), "Fakty" (1979), "Kino" (1989), and "Kwartalnik Filmowy" (1996). His articles on the history of Romantic literature appeared in journals including "Ruch Literacki" ((1983, 1988, 1989, 1998, and 2002), "Res Publica" (1989), "Teksty Drugie" (1991), "Zeszyty Naukowe Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego" (1992), "Universitas" (1992, 1995, and 1998), "Przegląd Humanistyczny" (1993 and 1996), "Rocznik Towarzystwa Literackiego im. A. Mickiewicza" (1994, 1998, and 2005), "Nowy Nurt" (1995), "Poznańskie Studia Polonistyczne" (1996), "Konteksty Kultury" (2013), and "Teologia Polityczna" (2017). His column pieces and articles on culture and politics appeared in the newspapers "Gazeta Polska" (2006-2007, 2009, 2013, and 2015), "Gazeta Polska Codzienna" (2013, 2015, and 2019-2020) and "Niezależna Gazets Polska Nowe Państwo" (2014-2015 and 2019). In recognition of his work in the humanities and his poetry he received the Zygmunt Krasiński Medal (2022), the Cyprian Norwid Medal (2022), and the FENIKS Tadeusz Miciński Prize (2024). He was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit (2002), the Medal of the Commission of National Education (2016) and the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis (2022). He lives in Chorągwica near Wieliczka.
