BIO
Born on 3 June 1968 in Złotoryja; son of the miner Adam Jan Suska and Natalia. He attended primary school in Złotoryja. From 1983, he was a pupil at the Belgian Polonia Grammar School in Wroclaw, where he attended the specialist mathematics and physics class. During his time there, he reached the finals of the Olympiad of Polish Literature and Language. After completing advanced secondary education in 1987, he studied applied physics at the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (Politechnika Wrocławska – PWr). He made his debut as a poet in 1989 in the Independent Students' Association (NZS) periodical of PWr. students, "Na Indeksie", which was published outside the reach of state censorship. Suska was on its editorial board. In 1990, he boycotted the compulsory military programme that was part of his studies, which meant that he failed his third year at PWr. He then moved to the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Wroclaw (UWr), where he continued his studies, specializing in the physics of solids. He graduated with an ordinary degree in 1993, before being awarded a master's degree from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw (UW) in 1999. From 1995, he worked in Warsaw as an editor and journalist, initially in the culture section of the daily "Życie Warszawy" (until 1996; he published book reviews there in 1995), then at "Życie" (1996–98), and from 1998 to 2005 at the daily "Gazeta Wyborcza", where he edited the culture section and co-edited the books supplement "Gazeta Książki". His poems, as well as reviews of mainly poetry volumes, appeared in periodicals including "NaGłos" (1993), "Lampa i Iskra Boża" (1995 and 1999–2002) and "Lampa" (2004–05), "Fronda" (1996–97), "Res Publica Nowa" (1999–2000, and 2003), and in the Catholic weekly "Tygodnik Powszechny" (1999–2000). In 2000/01, he took a postgraduate degree in IT at the Institute of Organisation and Management in Industry (ORGMASZ) in Warsaw. In 2005, he became a consultant editor at the Department of Feature Film Production for the private TVN television station. He remained active as a writer. He received fellowships and grants, spending time at the Hawthornden Castle Fellowship, The International Retreat for Writers (Scotland; 2000), the Château de Lavigny International Writers’ Residence (Switzerland; 2001), and the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators in Visby (Sweden; 2006). He also appeared at festivals, including the Dublin Poetry Festival (2009), Ledbury Poetry Festival (UK; 2009), Marche de la Poesie in Paris (2009), and the Egdes International Literary Festival in Vladivostok (2010), while in 2014 he gave talks and readings as part of the Literary Port Ambassadors of Poetry project that was held in Saint Petersburg in 2014. He married the Polish studies graduate and art historian Aneta Pierzchała in 1998; they have a daughter, Natasza Helena (b. 2001) and a son, Leo Natan (b. 2007). He lives in Warsaw.
